Our society has conditioned us to believe that outrightly expressing that we love ourselves equates to being self-absorbed and self-centred. If I were to ask you to list all the things you love, how long will it take to mention yourself?? For many people, it is easier and more comfortable to pick what we do not love about ourselves than it is to pick things we love. So, for me to realise and acknowledge my awesomeness, as well as make the process easier, I keep a love journal by my bedside. I write three things I love about myself every night before bedtime. At first it was a struggle but now it flows easily and more comfortably.
It is important and necessary to know ourselves, Our true selves. Not in an arrogant way, but simply in a self-respecting way. I was raised with the idea that I must always put myself last in order to elevate other people. I grew up to be selfless in all aspects that I oftentimes I projected, and did what I believed was expected of me, and in the process neglect myself and my true wants and desires. Thanks to years of unlearning, I unlearnt that belief, because I am too awesome not to ever compliment myself. If you know me personally or follow me on social media, you know that almost all my captions are about loving and complimenting myself. I am the girl I really know I am. Coupled with the fact that I am a Virgo (if you know, you know).
Over the years I have learnt that self-love is loving yourself and make your wellbeing a priority so that you can show up as a better version of yourself and serve others in a better capacity. Learning how to be authentically friends with yourself is a core part of cultivating this self-love. This involves being open to getting to know yourself, spending time with yourself, sitting with yourself and being with yourself, and in doing so healing the relationship with yourself. We heal our relationship with our whole life, our emotions, our body, our finances, our careers, our relationship with others so that we can live with ease, vitality, and joy.
